will a Master’s in real estate development teach me the engineering behind building a building?
I’m about to graduate, and I don’t know what area of study in grad school will help me most.
My future goal is to design and build residental homes from scratch, then maybe sell them for some profit, but I don’t want to just manage or just construct, I want to do both – Be the owner, designer, and the builder, subcontracting as I need.
basically, what sort of a graduate program should I be looking at to not only be able to manage the building of a residential house, but also the building science behind it and design of it.
As the other answer says, a Master’s in real estate development isn’t what you’re looking for.
Best way, as the other answer suggested, is to talk to people who’ve already done that.
I’d also suggest that you get a business degree, to give you some additional “tool” regarding running and managing a business. Or, if not a degree, at least a certificate or series of courses. In addition to the technical skills, you’ll need strong business management skills.
Check with community colleges, too. Many have courses not only in the hands-on stuff (like plumbing and electrical), but also in areas you’re talking about–how to be a contractor, or learning how to subcontract.
Sounds as if you might be interested in some courses in architecture and mechanical engineering, too. I’m not sure whether it’d make sense to actually pursue a degree in those areas, but maybe there’s some course of study that would allow you to take a mix of courses like that.
Still, start off by talking to people who are successful at doing what you want to do. Get their advice. (Hey, and even be open to a possible job offer.)
