What do you look for at Estate Sales or garage sales?
We are having a garage sale and really want people to take home our stuff. Once we put books out and no one bought any of them, so we think it is a waste of time to put them out. So our family wanted to ask, what is it people are really looking for when they go to a garage sale? Faux jewelry? Clothes? Please help us make ours the best sale, and also so we have very little to donate after the sale. Thanks!
Consider your purpose in having a garage sale. If you’re looking to primarily make money, eBay is likely to be a better option, though arguably a more time consuming one.
However, if you’re like me, the main purpose of garage sale is to get stuff out of your house. If so, consider selling things in bulk–for example, instead of individually pricing items of clothing, put out a bin of plastic grocery bags and sell them by the bag. This can also work for books or small toys.
If you’re selling any electronics, hook up an extension cord and set the items up so people can see if they work and how well. A plugged in radio playing classic rock will sell far better than one with no juice.
At my last yard sale, I also included a box marked “FREE” right near the start of the driveway to lure people in. I put some kitchen utensils, magnets, and other odds and ends in there, and it was quite successful.
Finally, these are the items people specifically and repeatedly asked if I had at my yard sale:
* costume jewelry (way more than anything else!)
* tools
* hardcover books
(I gave you advice based on my yard sale because as a “looker” at yard/estate sales, I’m often in the market for unusual things that probably wouldn’t help you!
